EXPLAINED: Is uncapped IPL player rule new or old, and is it designed for MS Dhoni?

The IPL Governing Council has brought back the ‘uncapped’ player retention rule, which allows franchises to retain two Indian players who haven’t played international cricket or held a central contract for five years. This move benefits Chennai Super Kings by enabling them to retain MS Dhoni for the 2025 season. A few other former India players also qualify to be considered ‘uncapped’.
